Skim coating concrete gives it a new finish about 1/4-inch thick. Unlike other types of decorative refinishing options, like stamping concrete or exposing decorative aggregate, skim coating is within the capability of beginner and experienced do-it-yourselfers alike.

Concrete resurfacing is a way to make old concrete look new again. A concrete coating is applied over the existing surface, offering a variety of color, texture and pattern options. This type of decorative refinishing can be done on driveways, patios, pool decks and even indoor floors.

Fill the walkway joints with peel-and-stick foam weatherstripping, and dampen the concrete if necessary. The resurfacer is workable for about 20 minutes, so mix just half a bag of powder with 5½ cups of water at a time. That's enough to cover two sidewalk slabs, or about 17 square feet. Pour it on the walk.

There aren't many reasons to have only a 1-inch thick concrete surface. It is too thin to use as a flooring just by itself; however if you need to resurface damaged concrete, a 1-inch layer is a good amount. The old surface is prepared so that the new concrete will adhere, then the new cement is added.

To smooth a rough concrete slab, you will need to brush off all debris with a broom, then wash away the grime with a mop using neutral cleaner and warm water. Next, you will want to identify the areas with cracks or misshapen areas.

Use 1 part cement and 1 part sand. Add water to the mix until it is the consistency of paint. This is used to coat the surface of the concrete right before you do the overlay coat. The mixture is thin enough to get down into the pores of the old concrete, as well as bond to the new.Jul 17, 2017
